Think And See Your Way To A Better Life

I’ve written much about the power of our thoughts and the effects those thoughts have on our lives.   The reason that I am able to write about it is because I have experienced  first hand the power of positive thinking and negative thinking.

For many years I read everything I could get my hands on that I thought could help me create a better life for myself.  The problem was that I wasn’t applying what I had learned because part of me didn’t believe that the solution was something as simple as changing my thoughts.  It wasn’t until I reached my mid-thirties that something finally clicked.

While in the middle of my divorce, I sat down one day and made a list of all the things I wanted in my life.  After many hours of soul-searching I was able to “see” the life that I wanted, including the type of man I wanted to be with, the lifestyle I wanted, the places I would travel to, and the person I wanted to be.  It’s been 7 years now and I can tell you that most of what I envisioned for myself has come to be.

I believe that there are a few components that are crucial to creating the life that you want:

  • You must be clear about what it is you want.  Creating a detailed list will help you to sharpen your focus and therefore your thoughts.
  • You must become aware of your thoughts and the things you say to yourself.  Are your thoughts in line with what you desire or do they go against it?  Remember that we create what we think so be aware of your thoughts.
  • You must not let setbacks or obstacles deter you.  Sometimes I think it’s God’s/Universe’s way of checking to see if it’s what we really want.  Keep the course and keep your thoughts focused and positive.

‘Tis The Season

The holidays are upon us once again and for some people this can be a very difficult time of year.  Years past I used to fall into a depression just before the start of winter and it was due in part to not living the kind of life I had dreamed of for myself.

Money was tight, there was so much more to do to get ready for the holidays and things just hadn’t turned out the way I planned.  One particularly difficult year, a good friend of mine suggested that I take my focus off myself and put it on others that were less fortunate than me.  So I spent most of the day that Thanksgiving serving dinner to others who couldn’t afford it.  That experience left me with a sense of gratitude for all the things that were good in my life.

For Christmas that year, the kids and I decided that they would receive fewer gifts so that we could help others who were less fortune have a better Christmas.  Together we chose tags off the giving tree in one of the local stores and we each selected gifts for the recipients on the tags.  My daughter chose a girl her age and picked out gifts that she herself wanted.  My son did the same and I chose a teenage girl, knowing how difficult those years are for kids.

Our day of shopping for people we had never met left us all with such a wonderful feeling.  What I came to realize was that I could focus on what I didn’t have in my life or I could focus on what I DID have.  Either way, I was in charge of my own thoughts and feelings.

Out of that experience I developed a plan for myself that has served me well ever since.  When things are not going the way I wish them too, I focus on all that is going well and I formulate a plan or goal for changing the things I don’t like.  How I feel is a direct result of what I think.  Therefore, I choose to focus on the positive while I work towards changing the negative.

If you suffer from seasonal depression, try changing your focus.  Keep a daily gratitude list to help you see all that is good in your life.  Spend some time with positive people.  Do something nice for others less fortunate than you.  And remember that you have a choice about where you want to focus your thoughts.

Your Attitude Is Your Choice

I visited my mom recently in Florida and while there we had lots of interesting conversations.  One in particular has stuck with me and I have decided that there is a valuable lesson in it that I want to share with others.

My mom knows that I have had my share of tough times over the years but what I didn’t realize was that she held the belief that I was the kind of person who could fall in a pile of sh*t and come out smelling like a rose.  Let me assure you that I do not possess any magical abilities nor am I the bearer of some celestial luck.  The truth is that when I fall into a pile of sh*t, I do come out smelling like shi*t.  But here’s where the story takes a turn.

When bad things happen to me (and sometimes they do, that’s life), I acknowledge what has happened and then I clean myself off (I find the positive in the situation) and I move forward.  Tough times do not need to stick with us nor define us.  I have come to learn that it’s not what happens to us in life that makes the difference, it’s how we respond to what happens to us that determines whether or not we will end up smelling like poop or smelling like a rose.  I choose to smell like a rose.

When you are facing a difficult situation or when things aren’t working out the way you had planned you can choose to wallow in the situation or you can choose to see it as an opportunity for growth.  The manner in which you choose to respond will determine the outcome.  Obstacles are sometimes life way of getting us to change our direction, or teaching us a new lesson that will one day help us to reach the happiness and joy that we all yearn for.  Once you realize that you have a choice in how you respond, you’ll have the power to change your future.

How To Live An Abundant Life

Abundance is defined as:

  1. An extremely plentiful or over sufficient quantity or supply
  2. Overflowing fullness
  3. Affluence; wealth

What is your attitude towards abundance?  Do you believe there is enough wealth or everyone?  Do you believe you are entitled to experience a life of abundance?  The truth is that you’ll get exactly what you believe you’ll get.  If you have not experienced the abundance that life has to offer than I recommend that you work on changing your mindset or your beliefs.  Here are some suggestions to help you do that:

  • Examine the negative things you say to yourself on a regular basis and replace those thoughts with positive ones.
  • Use affirmations to help you reprogram your thoughts.
  • Create a dream board or vision board.
  • Spend time with positive thinking and successful people.

Today I Am Grateful For…

It’s 6:25 am and I am having my morning coffee and will soon be getting ready for work.  I thought I would share my gratitude list with you today (this is how I start every morning).

Today I am grateful:

  1. For another day to live, learn and experience life.
  2. For my job and all the great people I work with.
  3. For having a loving and supportive partner.
  4. For a hot cup of coffee to start my day.
  5. To have a car starter for cold mornings like this.
  6. To have the opportunity to blog and share my thoughts with others.
  7. To be in good health.
  8. That a dear friend is recovering well from his surgery.
  9. For the special bond that I share with my daughter.
  10. That my mom is going to be able to come visit over the holidays.

Your Attitude Is Your Choice

We have all experienced trying times in our lives.  But what determines the outcome is often times our own attitude about the situation we face.  How do you handle tough situations?  Do you automatically tell yourself that it’s going to turn out bad?  Do you take on a victim role or do you look for solutions?

I have learned that I can make a situation better or worse, depending on that attitude I choose.  Note that I said “choose”.  We may not have any control over the things that happen to us but we always have a choice in how we choose to react to it.  When you make the decision to view those tough times as opportunities for growth you will find that situation doesn’t seem as bad.  But when you make the decision to get upset, feel hopeless, or see it as some terrible thing you’ll get exactly what your attitude is projecting.

If you can learn to step back for a moment and pause before responding, you’ll give yourself just enough time to consciously decided how you want to perceive the situation at hand and then how you want to handle it.  This has been an ongoing process for me but I can honestly tell you that when I make the decision to view those situations as learning opportunities, it greatly affects the outcomes.

Zig Ziglar On Goal Setting

I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of writing your goals down.  I once read somewhere that goals not written down are just dreams.  And while it’s important to have dreams in order to know what it is you would like to see happen in your life, not writing your goals down is like getting into a row-boat without any paddles.  You’ll end up wherever the current takes you.

If you have not written down your goals before, I encourage you to do so.  Here is an example of what a  written goal looks like:


GOAL 1: I am running an internet business from my home.

Steps to Achieve Goal:

  1. I will subscribe to Entrepreneur and Success magazine to educate myself on running a successful home-based business.
  2. I will assess my skills, talents, and hobbies to determine what type of business I am best suited for.
  3. I will network with others who have started their own business.
  4. I will develop a business plan.
  5. Etc.

Target Date

By August 2009

You’ll notice that there are three parts to a written goal, 1. the long-term goal, 2. the steps or short-term objectives to reaching the goal, and 3. a target date.  All three steps are crucial if you want to see that goal achieved.

Zig Ziglar has a three-part series on goal setting that I think you’ll find to be very helpful.  Know what it is you want, write it down, set a completion date and take action every day until you reach your goal.

Living Life On Purpose And With Purpose

Have you ever asked yourself, why am I here?  What is my purpose in life?  Is this all there is?  Well you’re not alone.  Many people go through life asking themselves these questions.  I personally believe that when we seek to find the answers to these questions, life becomes more meaningful and joyful.

I began on that road to discovery about 6 years ago.  Up until that point I was basically drifting along with the currents of my life and not making any real decisions for myself because I didn’t know who I was or why I was here.  I was some body’s daughter, some body’s wife, some body’s mother and some body’s employee but I didn’t know if that was all that I was supposed to be.  Deep down inside I felt that there had to more to life than what I was living and experiencing.

Once I began to question the meaning of my life, the answers started to become clear.  I read the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren which helped me to look at the gifts/talents that I had.  I immediately recognized that I am a people person and I enjoy helping others.  I also realized that my purpose in life is not necessarily connected to my career but rather it’s being able to use my gifts/talents to help others everyday in whatever way I can.  My purpose in life is to inspire, encourage, and teach others.  And I am able to do that through a variety of avenues: work, friendships, blogging, writing, volunteering, etc.

Change Your Thinking If You Want To Change Your Life

I am a firm believer that we create our own happiness and success by the very things we think.  Much has been written on this topic by Norman Vincent Peale, Zig Ziglar, Bob Proctor, Louise L. Hay, to name a few.  And while they may each present the information a bit differently, they all agree that it is our own thoughts and belief systems that creates the life that we have.

Therefore, if you are not living the kind of life you would like to, I challenge you to take a closer look at the things that you say and believe to be true about yourself.  Are your thoughts and beliefs mostly positive and conducive to living a life of happiness and success?  Or are they negative and defeating?  If you find that your core beliefs and self talk are negative, you must apply the principles of positive thinking to reprogram those thoughts.

Two of my favorite websites that focus on improving your life through positive thinking are Morning Coach and Positive Thinking Radio.  Both of these websites also offer podcasts on Itunes that can be downloaded to listen to any time you want.  One of the best ways to change your thought habits is to immerse yourself in as much positive thinking as you can.  You can do this by reading books on the topic, visiting websites for more information, listening to podcasts, or even watching related videos on Youtube.  Changing your thinking will take some time but if you make the decision today to start focusing on the things you think and purposely changing them, you will begin to see a change in your world.
