Make Your Dreams A Reality This Year

“Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make them come true.” ~Anonymous

The new year is fast approaching and with that comes yet another opportunity to set new goals for yourself.  The New Year has always been associated with renewed resolve to accomplish some goal.  So now is the time to be thinking about what it is that you would like to see in your life for the coming year and to set a plan into action.

The first step is to think about what changes you would like to make in you life.  Is it to make more money, find a new job, lose weight, exercise more, travel, take up yoga, quit smoking, make new friends, or something else?  What changes would improve your life?  What changes would bring you closer to the life that you really desire?  It’s not necessary to start with more than one goal.  As a matter of fact, one is plenty to start with.  It’s important that you be very clear and precise about your goal.  For example, “I want to weigh 125 lbs is clearer than “I want to lose weight.”  And “I want to take a 10 day vacation in Jamaica is more precise than “I want to go on a vacation this year.”

The next step is to write your goal down.  There are three parts to a well written goal, 1. The goal itself, 2. Action steps, and 3. The deadline.  This is what a properly written goal looks like:

Goal:  I am running a sewing business from my home

Steps to achieve goal:

Clean out the den for my new work space.

Buy a multi-function sewing machine.

Place ads in the newspaper advertising my business.

Set aside $2500 for working capital.

Target Date:  By April 2009

I can’t state strongly enough the importance of having your goal written down.  Research shows that only 3% of the population actually writes down their goals and you can probably guess who that 3% is.  That’s right, the wealthy.

Place your goal somewhere that you’ll see it every day.  The reason for this is to keep it in the forefront of your mind.  You will want to take some action every day towards reaching your goal.  If your goal is to run a sewing business from your home then you’ll work a little each day on cleaning out the den until that step is completed.  Next you’ll start pricing sewing machines and putting aside a predetermined amount of money from your paycheck that goes into a separate “sewing account”.  After you have selected the sewing machine you’ll start writing your ads.  Once you have the money to purchase the sewing machine, you’ll place your ads in the papers, in community places, online, and anywhere else that you believe will be effective.

Keep your deadline as your measuring stick.  If you are three weeks away from the deadline and you are still on step one, do not change your deadline but rather kick it into gear so that you can reach that goal by the date you chose.  If you find that you haven’t been working steadily towards your goal you may need to ask yourself if this is something that you really want or are you doing something that you think others want you to do.  If this isn’t a goal that you are passionate about, you’ll never reach it.

the start of the New Year is a great time to set a new goal for yourself.  Take some time in formulating your goal so that it is clear and precise and make sure that it is a goal that you truly desire.  Then write your goal down including the steps you’ll need to take to accomplish it along with a deadline.  Then take some form of action every day towards reaching that goal.  Know ahead of time that you will be successful this year and you will be!

Wishing you much happiness and success!
