What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do

I believe that uncertainty is really my spirit’s way of whispering, “I’m in flux. I can’t decide for you. Something is off-balance here.” ~Oprah Winfrey, O Magazine, June 2003
I have to admit, I have experienced these times of flux on occasion too and I can’t say I enjoyed them very much.  I like things to go along smoothly and as planned.  Although I instinctively know that these times usually bring me to a better place or teach me something new about myself, I can get sucked into a quagmire in the interim.

So what can we do in the meantime?  What do you do when you don’t know what to do?  Here are some of the strategies I employ:

  • Pray or meditate – I ask for guidance or clarification.  It’s important to pay attention to the messages that you receive.  I have dismissed thoughts that have come to me before thinking they didn’t make sense or it wasn’t what I wanted to hear, only to learn later that I had received the answer the first time I asked.
  • Change Your Focus – When I feel out of sorts and am not sure what my next move is, I sometimes find it helpful to just take my mind off the issue at hand.  Often times the right solution will pop right into my head when I least expect it.
  • Exercise – Exercising is a great stress reliever for me.  It leaves me feeling re-energized and more focused.
  • Connect with Nature – Going for a walk in the woods or sitting outside in the fresh air helps me to get centered and balanced.  There’s nothing like taking in the sights, sounds, smells, and taste of nature to rejuvenate your soul.
  • Write in a Gratitude Journal – Those times of uncertainty leave us feeling as if everything is going wrong in our lives.  When I’m feeling like that I write in my gratitude journal which helps to remind me of all that is going right in my life, which leaves me feeling more positive about things.

Just remember that nothing is permanent in life and this too shall pass.  But in the meantime, try one of the strategies listed above when you don’t know what to do.

Wishing you much happiness and success!
