Getting What You Want Out of Life

Creating change in your life requires focusing your attention on the outcome you would like to see and working through any obstacle you encounter along the way.  You begin by first choosing one area that you would like to improve; health, relationship, career, family, etc.  Then ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I deserve to have this?
  • Do I have the necessary abilities/talents?
  • Why do I want this?
  • What am I willing to do to achieve this goal?

Let’s take a look at the first question.  If you do not believe that you deserve something, YOU will be the obstacle to reaching that goal.  None of us were born believing we are unworthy or undeserving of things in our lives.  That belief stems from messages we have received from OTHERS.  It is essential for you to believe that you deserve good things in your life in order to see them materialize.

Do you have the necessary abilities or talents?  Don’t be discouraged if you first answer no.  This question simply lets you know if you need to do some work.  Let’s say you want to lose 30lbs in a healthy way so that you don’t gain it all back but you know nothing about nutrition.  What can you do?  Call your doctor, take a class on nutrition, make an appointment with a dietician, etc.  The point is to identify any area of weakness and strengthen it.

This next question is very important.  The reasons why you want to reach certain goals often times provides the motivation you need to stick with it until you succeed.  You need to really take a good look at the whys of a goal.  If you want to lose 30lbs so that someone will like you more or will treat you differently, that’s the wrong reason and let me explain why.  When we are motivated out of the need to please others rather than ourselves, it often times leads to disappointment because the focus is on the wrong person.  Lose 30lbs because it will improve YOUR self-esteem.  It will make YOU feel more confident.  And it will make YOU happier which in turn will have a positive effect on others around you.

Lastly, What are you willing to do to reach your goal?  Are you willing to take a few classes to improve your job skills?  Are you willing to make mistakes and start over?  Are you willing to deny yourself some material things in the interim until you reach your goal?  The lengths that you are willing to go to will be the predictor of your success.

Once you’ve worked through these questions, you are well on your way towards success.  Focus all your attention and resources on reaching that goal.  You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.
