Do You Believe?

“Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe.” -St. Augustine

Here are some definitions of faith found in the Merriam-Webster online dictionary:

  1. Fidelity to one’s promises.
  2. Firm belief in something for which there is no proof.
  3. Something that is believed especially with strong conviction.

Faith is an essential ingredient for creating the life you desire.  If you do not believe that something is possible, you’re right.  And if you believe something IS possible, again you are right.  Your belief about an outcome is the number one indicator of whether or not you’ll achieve what you seek.  I think what trips most people up is that they believe something is possible,  just not for them.  Again this goes back to the messages that we received while growing up.  The good news is that beliefs can be changed.  All you need to do is look for evidence that supports those beliefs.

Here’s an example.  Let’s say that you would like to run your own business one day.  But your initial belief is that it isn’t possible.  You have two choices here; you can focus on all the reasons why it wouldn’t be possible or you can focus on all the reasons why it would be possible.  Do you have a burning desire to work for yourself?  Are you reasonably intelligent?  Do you have a passion for a particular business or industry?  Are you excited about the possibilities?  This is where faith begins to grow.  You focus on the positives and the possibilities, not the negatives.

Another hurdle that trips some people up is when they encounter bumps in the road.  The first sign of a setback and their faith begins to wane.  They start to question the possibility of reaching their goal.  This is where most people give up the ship and accept the belief that this is not a possibility for them.  Unfortunately, the bumps are usually just a test to see how badly they want that dream.  Faith is holding fast to the belief that your dream is coming true, especially during trying times.  I love this quote by Anthony Robbins, “God’s delays are not God’s denials”.

If you do not believe that something can be a possibility for you, look up Colonel Sanders (Kentucky Fried Chicken) story, or Soichiro Honda’s (Founder of the Honda Corporation).  They became very successful people despite some incredible obstacles because they believed in themselves.  You can move mountains with “faith as small as a mustard seed”.  Focus on the possibilities and know that anything that you can dream, you can achieve.

“Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened for you.”  -Matthew 7:7

Wishing you much happiness and success!
