“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.” Napolean Hill
Mastering my thoughts has been one of the hardest things I have had to learn. My mind used to race a hundred miles a minute. I was one of those people that had to either read or watch tv at night in order to slow the chatter down in my head so that I could fall asleep. Just being mindful of my self-talk and thoughts was not enough for me to be able to control it.
I discovered meditation a long time ago but like all new things I try, I didn’t stick with it for more than a few weeks. As a result of some pretty significant changes in my life over the past 6 years I have once again turned to meditations. And this time, the practice has stuck. Let me explain why.
I started taking a yoga class the year I went through my divorce as a means of relieving some of the stress I was going through. I had a wonderful yoga instructor who always ended each session with a guided meditation. For the first time, I had found a way to quiet all of the self-talk in my head and to purposefully focus my thoughts on the positive things in my life. I continue to use meditation today to keep myself grounded and balanced.
Some of my favorite guided meditations are Meditation Oasis and the The Meditation Podcast. Both of these can be found on www.itunes.com along with many others. If you have not tried meditating before or have not found a way to gain mastery over your thoughts, give guided meditations a try. It’s been extremely successful for me.
Wishing you much happiness and success!
